Seed Starting & Exchanges

It is hard to think about the gardens when THIS is what it looks like outside. What the HECK; where is all this coming from :/

Alas, our seed order came in and I finally had some time to get some of the seeds started. We are a tad late on some (a'hem, the onions) but better late than never. Among the seeds I started were some of the heirlooms I ordered from Bakers Creek. Anyone else out there order from them?

So, here is my completed task for the day! Of course, minus the seedlings of Leeks & Purple Haze Tomatos you see in the background. Hubby did those awhile ago and I also now realize we didn't quite start the Leeks right, but that is ok.

I did Jupiter Peppers, Cherokee Purple Tomatos, Suttgarter Onions, Ferrys Round Dutch Cabbage and some Cilantro today. The rest of our seeds can be direct sowed once the weather turns.

This was my helper today - a lot of good he was ;)
Anyone looking to trade some seeds?

I am open to any kind of trade as long as it is something we'd eat and don't already have! Among the seeds I have for trade are:

  • Cherokee Purple Tomato

  • Stuttgarter Onion

  • Jupiter Pepper

  • Ferrys Round Dutch Cabbage

  • Carentan Leeks

  • Edamame Seeds

  • Coriander Seeds

  • Deer Tounge Lettuce

  • Fin De Meaux Cucs

  • Ruby Wallace's Old Time White Cucs

  • Parisian Pickling Cucs

  • Golden Wax Beans

  • KY Wonder Pole Beans

  • Atomic Red Carrots

Trucking Along...

I have had every intention of getting more seedlings planted this week since our seed order came in....and I have yet to get to it! I'll tell ya, a fussy little one can sure make your day seem to last forever and fly by all at the same time. Meanwhile, the horses are enjoying the Spring weather :)

Gypsy rolling off her winter coat ;)

And hubby gets to enjoy it with them! It's still too chilly for the babe, but I sneak out for some fresh air when I can. I do miss being in the barn though. I MISS cleaning stalls :)

False Imaging?

No Wonder some women have a complex after they give birth! I mean, seriously!
There are so many things wrong with this picture I came across while browsing a baby items retailer website! Where do I begin?

First of all, I am sure I can speak for many breastfeeding mothers when I say that I already feel like a milking parlor....why in gods name would I want to be able to attach my equipment to me to be mobile? So I can run the vacuum and do the dishes all while pumping? Seriously? Or maybe so I could fold laundry and get dinner ready? *Pffffft, riggggggggght!*

And when the phone rings, if I can't get to it, then I can't get to it. That is what voicemail is for. Let's be honest...how many women pumping would be standing in a model pose, smiling, while chatting it up on the phone?

And shall we address this woman's figure? Did the manufacturer of this 'item' think that if women saw this picture, they would somehow, subliminally think that they too would have that kind of waist and six-pack shortly after delivering their baby?? C'mon folks! Let's be real. I almost don't want to patronize their products just for the sheer stupidity of their advertising department! Let me a little more realistic shall we?

So back to my first statement in the post - NO WONDER WOMEN GET A COMPLEX! I mean, if I don't look like THAT while pumping, after birthing a child, then what is wrong with me! There must be something wrong with me!

Pre-Allen Glenn!

We received the proofs from our maternity photo shoot yesterday. Here are a few of my favorites! This photographer does such nice work :) You can find her on Facebook at Aubrey Adair Photography.
I love this one of hubby & I :)

Gosh, and to think I still had a tad under 2 months to go in this picture!!

Me and my Apollo, of course :)

Allen meets his Horses!

We had nice, warmer weather again today so I couldn't resist....especially since it is supposed to go back to the 30's for the next week :(

When hubby got home, we took Allen out to meet the horses - FINALLY!

Gypsy loved him, as I suspected she would!

Apollo could take him or leave him...as I suspected he'd feel ;)

Daisy was curious until she realized she couldn't get to his fingers for a lick and a nip ;)

And Romey loved him :) Future 4H partners? Maybe!!

And I had to get my lovin' too :)

Sleepy Saturday

All the plans we had for today were post-poned, and I think Allen liked that just fine!
Don't forget to check out the moon tonight!

Spring is on the Way!

The weather has been so nice these past two days! I am envious of my hubby who is outside doing yard work! Me and the babe are inside looking out the windows :) Ok, I steal a few moments of fresh (barn) air when he is asleep :)

Our seedlings of some tomatos and leeks are coming along. I just send in a seed order yesterday so we are a little behind, but none the less. Off the top of my head, we ordered Atomic Red Carrots, Moon & Stars Watermelon, Yellow Wax Beans, KY Wonder Pole Beans, Jupiter Sweet Pepper, Stuttgarter Onion, Rocky Top Mountain Lettuce Mix, Parisian Cuc for Pickling and Cherokee Purple Tomato.

This seems to be Maggie's new favorite place to sleep!

Blue Sky!!!

Whinny & Daisy greeting each other in the morning.

The Tulips (my fav!) are coming up...but the weather is supposed to drop again next week :( I hope they make it.

Savannah is on the prowl....critters beware!

Seems we had the same kind of weather this time last year in March too :)

Moooo

Did I really just post a picture of pumped breast milk?

Well, yes...I guess I did....because, right now, this is my life! I am covered in pee (Baby 3, Mommy 0!) and milk and sometimes I am just too tired to even worry about changing my shirt? Why bother?
Hubby reminded me 100x that it is going to be so nice out today....'thanks, I'll be inside!' Maybe once he gets home from work and gets barn chores done, I can go outside for a few to enjoy the weather and get one of the horses groomed ;)
So, all in all, I cannot complain. Things seem to be going relatively good (other than feeling like a milking parlor open 24/7 and being a tad short on my sleep) and I am anxious for the weather to get really nice so I can take Allen outside. Allen, as in the baby, not Allen as in my hubby - *oy* this is going to take some getting used too!

A Whole New Novice Journey!

Pardon my abscence! Most of my computer time now, when I have it, is with the use of one hand!

There is a new little man in town and he is keeping us on our toes :)

And I must say, he has the best Daddy in the world!

Weekend in a Word - Pruning

It's been a dreary weekend here weather-wise and we we're hoping *someone* would maybe go into labor! No such luck! So, I mopped floors and groomed horses and hubby worked in the orchard.

The time to prune your trees in our area is between January-March...but quite frankly, February was miserable, I can't remember January, and so now here we are in March doing the pruning. Ok, not we, but hubby! We pruned in March last year too. At least, although dreary, the weather has broke a little. Pruning can be a work out so if you don't have to tromp around in feet of snow, it makes it a tad easier.

This is a Quince tree after pruning.

Here hubby is evaluating which cuts he'll take.

And he prunes away!

I don't know if you can tell very well in this picture, but these are all suckers cut from this tree laying all over the ground. I must say, my LEAST favorite part about running the orchard is going through after pruning and picking up all the clippings!

Farm Photoshoot by Kellie

My sister, Kellie, has been stopping out to the farm to take photos for a college class she is taking. They are turning out JUST AWESOME! So I have to share :)

Savannah
Resident farm manager. Don't mess with her man! For entertainment, she hides on ledges and swipes at you when you walk by and least expect it ;) She only lets Allen pick her up, worm & vaccinate her.....and that is just fine with me!

Ms. Gypsy Rose :)

She is sweet as pie. Gentle and loves kids.
