Hay, the new Gold

There are a few things one can assume when viewing this cell cam picture I snapped last 'night'....at probably 5:45 pm-ish

  1. Daylight Savings time suxs
  2. The horses need hay
  3. The horses needed hay badly, thus we were picking up on a Tuesday evening after work (this is usually something reserved for a Saturday!)
  4. The horses needed hay badly because my hay guy sold out on me...even though my hubby told him we'd be back for 200 more bales to keep us through winter...
  5. I was in a mad, frantic state all weekend looking for hay and no one had any - literally - no hay to be found
  6. I was pulling in random driveways of farms and amish homes asking - NO.HAY.to be found
  7. We found some hay 2 minutes down the road from us (hooray) for a crazy insane price. And I don't mean crazy insane in a good way, but 'hay', the horses NEED it.
  8. Hay is like gold right now. If you find it, you better buy it, otherwise it will be gone when some other unlucky soul whose hay guy sold out on them finds it before you
  9. Yes, I followed my husband in my vehicle, straight from work, with my work clothes on, fashioned in muck boots, and a baby in my back seat, because there was no way in hell anyone was getting that hay before I did!
  10. ...and, I still need more.

I have a friend, whose husband's family produced hay to sell each year; it put 4 kids through college! Since his parents have both passed away, I now wonder if there's enough hay in their area.
We NEED to support our family farms in this country (along with teachers);it's the backbone of an agrarian society!

Wow what a challenge! I am so glad that you were able to find some but sorry that you had to pay such a premium price for it. I hope that you find more soon and it will cost less!

I'm glad you got some hay! Why is it so scarce???

bee girl - in my area, it was a bad year for hay with the weather. some farmer's whole third cutting is still sitting in the field, wasted, due to rain etc. :(

Okay, you're making me a little nervous. I felt pretty good with the amount I bought, but it has to last until 1st cut. Now after reading your post, I might should go back and get more. The price has gone up another buck!! ....Supply & demand days.

scary situation. just a random thought but could you and some other farmers/herdsmen form a sort of a buying co-op with a local hay producer? a sort of hay CSA? your co-op would pony up $ in the winter (when cash infusion most appreciated) and in return get guaranteed first dibs on the bales?

That's awful. I'm sorry to hear it's been such a rough year! I'll be sending you good thoughts for more (affordable) hay!!!

My brother has a form of a hay CSA that he is part of in his area, but he still wound up paying a huge premium this year for additional hay. It is SO high even here!
