Orchard Update - Mid June

Things are looking good in the orchard! I am starting to get excited!! We definitely are seeing scab on some varieties - thank you April and May for all your excessive rain! But the apples are still edible - just not particularly pretty ;)

There is also evidence of frost on some apples, but again, still edible, just not as pretty!

{These are our Yellow Transparent Apples. We only have one of these trees and it is the first of the apples to harvest - usually late July. They are a very soft apple with a short shelf life and they are best used for sauce.}

Oooh, making homemade applesauce would be amazing.

This is the organic pesticide we use. http://nycgardening.blogspot.com/2010/10/organic-weed-killer-and-fungicide.html However, we find that it doesn't work so well, so we've been spraying it every other day. My husband bought the Ortho Elementals Insecticidal Soap, thinking it was organic, but I just read in this article that it's not safe to use on food plants. http://greenupgrader.com/16232/is-ortho-elementals-organic/ Which makes no sense since there is a tomato on the bottle. Misleading!

BTW, my husband's father, the farmer recommended that I buy PYRETHRIN INSECTICIDE, which is a natural organic pesticide also. I haven't tried it but I think I'll buy some soon.

Thank you Debi - Knock on wood, no, we haven't had many deer issues thus far.
