Harvest Monday, July 18, 2011

This past week was a slim harvest again, but better than none!

I harvested herbs from the herb garden, including Dill and Cilantro.

We harvested our first peppers - 3 Jalepeno's!!

And, we harvested the onions pictured below. I don't know what to say about them...I planted them last year, I thought they didn't make it, then they sprouted up this spring, so we just pulled them and this is what we have! I haven't had much luck growing onions and I have decided that next year, I am just going to direct seed them and see what happens. No more fussing with bulbs or starting seeds early indoors.

Sunday Hubby and I spent all morning [before it became 90 degrees of sweltering sun] doing a massive weeding overhaul in the garden. We are almost done and when we're finished, I am going to lay down straw and see how that works in helping to keep down the weeds.

Check out what other gardener's harvested this past week over at Daphne's Dandelions!

My jalepenos aren't ready yet. And I didn't plant onions - yours look great! We've had zucchini, yellow squash, green beans, turnips, and beets so far.

That's a good harvest of onions for ones you thought had expired previously!

Those are beautiful onions. Bigger than what we harvested last summer. Ours are just pingpong size. We hope for better luck next summer:).

Nice onions! So fun when we get volunteers to surprise us in the garden.

Great onions! I have the worst time growing them as well. Tried twice now and failed. I just don't think my garden gets enough sunlight for them.

I think your inions look just fine!

That's strange about the onions not doing much last year but producing this year. I'm hoping for better onions this year after starting from seed indoors.

I think your onions are good sized! Nice harvest! I'm still sometime away from pulling mine up!

I think that your onions look great! This is the first year that I have had a good onion harvest. Last year I grew them from seed and they were the size of a quarter!

Isn't it nice to have something recover so well for you? I think my main onions will be ready in a couple weeks.

As every one else has said, those onions are nothing to be ashamed of! I think growing onions is actually more difficult than some people imagine. Like most plants, some years they do well and others they don't, so don't give up just because of one disappointing harvest.

Oh the onions look awesome! I definitely want to grow some of them this coming year!

Very nice for your onions! Bet it was a nice surprise for you! I usually do seeds. I have started seed indoors, and started seed outdoors, both with success and not much fuss.

What a nice surprise! I've had luck (both good and bad actually) with seeds planted straight away and with seeds started early inside. Unfortunately, I can't quite figure out which is better for which plants... Ah the life of a gardener!

Great Onions, I just pulled mine today. I also have trouble with onions, mine never get large enough.

My onions are really wimpy ... I'm not going to bother with bulb onions again; just bunching types and leeks from now on....

Wow, overwintered onions. I've never heard of that before. They look delicious. We seeded them indoors last year. They did terribly. Next year we're doing things differently. Maybe direct seeding is a good idea. hmmmm?

Great to hear about your harvest! The onions do look delicious! Stay cool!

I tried growing onions last year and I gave up. I decided it's one of those crops that I'll just have to buy at the market. We had a tiny harvest and wasn't worth the effort. Yours looks good.

I've heard grass clippings will help with weeds in your garden too :)
