Harvest Monday, June 20

Welcome Harvest Monday! As usual, I harvested a ton of my herbs as I went through the week while I cooked. Some Dill in Fridge Pickels, Basil & Oregeo in pasta, Lemon Balm in my Sun Tea, Cilantro in my Kale/Rice/Chick Pea dish and the list goes on and on! I bet if I weighed my Parsely, it'd be 500 pounds!! Ok, maybe not 500 but.....

So this week, we harvested 5.82 oz and the last of our Easter Egg Radishes. Two bolted so I left them to go to seed and then I can collect them and replant next year. Any suggestions for what to make with these radishes? This is the first year we've grown them. My husband eats them raw but I'd like to do something else with them!

We also harvested more Broccoli, 3.32 oz. I cannot believe the Broccoli we are having this year! Our cauliflower is close too!

And now a question for all you 'Harvest Monday'ers' out there ;) How do you grow your carrots?

Our patch is full and I read that you should thin out to no less than 2" apart. Here is a stack of what my husband pulled last night as he thinned a few rows. There were already tasty little nibblers there!
Here's to a good week :) Stay cool out there!

I eat radishes only raw, sorry I can’t help you there.
But when it comes to growing carrots, this year I have made seed mats (for the first time). They are great, no thinning and one packet of seeds is enough to feed an army.

Beautiful broccoli!

Try sautéing the radishes, sliced thin with onions. When caramelized, add a little balsamic vinegar. I love them this way.

i'm going to try for tomatoes in the fall.. the vegas weather is so hot that when it finally felt like it was time to plant something- it had already been months too late. =(

I saute rashes all the time -- with their greens. (But then I love all greens!) But the best dish I ever made with my radishes was when I threw them into the roaster to cook beside a pork roast. They were divine, golden, and delish!

Ohhhh Martha that sounds good! And i have a roast that needs cooked!

Yeah, I'm not a huge raw radish fan. Someone suggested cooking them like other roots, boiled or baked. I thought it sounded intriguing but I like Martha's idea too! I agree, lovely broccoli.

Oh that broccoli looks so good!

I plant radishes JUST FOR my husband. He eats them raw. I like Johanna & Martha's suggestion for sauteing them.

Like vrtlarica, I made seed mats for my carrots this year. I learned about it from Annie's Granny. Here's a link to her post on how to make your own seed mat: http://annieskitchengarden.blogspot.com/2009/09/september-22-2009-home-made-seed-mat.html

Thank you thank you!

Nice broccoli and radishes, I'm a novice myself, not much help here.
Last fall I grew my first (successful) crop of carrots using Annie's Granny seed mat method without thinning, and I love it.

Well when I have carrots I thin to about 3". I've found they don't get big very fast if they are closer, but I plant in rows 3-4" apart so it is more like block planting than row planting. If you plant in rows father apart then you can keep them closer together within the row. This year however my carrots didn't germinate so I have exactly one that doesn't want to grow. Last year I had great carrots.

I love radishes and they rarely make it out of my salads, but I have been know to stir fry them. You can grate them into tuna fish sandwiches.

Nice harvest! I just eat the radishes raw with a bit of sea salt on them as appetizer while we are cooking dinner. Nothing fancy.

As for carrots, I just plant them as spread out as I can an thin as needed. I'll have to take a look at Granny's seed mat, though.

I agree, I need to try out Granny's seed mats!

I like your radishes - I haven't tried growing that one but I bet it's good! I grew 4 different radishes last winter and used them in salads. I create a simple salad or use mesclun greens and put this on a plate. Then finely grate 2 different radishes - enough to fill 2 ice cream or espresso coffee scoops per plate and put 1 of each scoop on one side of the plate. I make a fruit or citrus type dressing, adding more over the radish mounds. The sweetness of the fruit dressing combines well with the pungentness of the radishes. People who aren't too crazy about radishes usually like this. If you only have a few radishes you could grate them into a salad too.

Glad you're having a good broccoli year! It can be a temperamental veggie. I generally just eat by radishes raw in a salad as well or pickled. They are a humble veggie for sure.

I'm going to second the vote for caramelized radishes -- that's what I did with our radishes all spring and they were shockingly delicious.
